The last time I installed CUPS from an external source, it screwed up my system so that any future Apple Update broke printing. I had to reinstall CUPS from the package file which I luckily saved. Only a full re-install fixed the problem. I've stayed way from these updates ever since and let Apple deal with CUPS through their own updates. They own it now.
