Dump Growl and EVERY file, visible and invisible, associated with it (might have to use a better find app than Apple's, like EasyFind - Growl's uninstall script is pretty useless), reboot, running AppleJack for good measure. That should give you back your mail. Growl really gums up the works and for me is a lot more trouble than it's worth.
