Not as good as it claims to be - zz6666

You should check things again. I have plenty of AVI files that I play using quicktime. You may need the free plugin to make it work, but it definitely works. And I use HandBrake to convert DVDs to quicktime movies all the time (just finished one now). Just select one of the iPod presets, or the AppleTV preset. I suspect the preset called QuickTime would work as well (but I've never tried that).

Question...why do you want AVI anyway? Why not just use H.264/MP4 and get better compression, iPod/iPhone/AppleTV compatibility, etc??? That said, there are plugins that allow AVI to play just fine in Quicktime. I still have no idea why you'd want AVI, but it's very easy to get that working.

I do agree with some of your comments re: VH, though. I much prefer HandBrake as well and have had no issues with HandBrake. I can't say the same for VH, although nothing serious. I prefer the HandBrake UI too. I usually rip with MTR since it handles some DVDs that HandBrake won't (make sure you have the 3.0 release, which you have to pay for). Then I batch up my ripped Video_TS folders in HandBrake and let them convert overnight. Works like a charm!
