Sounds like someone has an ax to grind - Eric M

Vuescan is a great deal. That $80 for the pro version is for unlimited updates. For life. That you can use on hundreds and hundreds of different scanners (maybe even the new one you just bought). It sounds like you're happy with the software that came with your new scanner. Great, but that's not always the case. A lot of what's put forth by HP, Canon, etc. is nothing to get excited about. In my experience, Vuescan is a considerable improvement over most scanner's bundled software.

Old registrations that break? Just contact Ed Hamrick by email. As a pro user myself, he's always been forthcoming with a new license number if the old one "broke". In fact, if memory serves, Vuescan itself alerted me to the need for a newly generated number. Drop Ed a note, and voila... new license.

If the pro version is too much, you can always get the standard edition for $40 (but with only a year's worth of updates). To me the pro version makes the most sense since the license will never die and you'll benefit from all the improvements along the way no matter what scanner I use.

At the end of the day, you have to do what's right for you. But for many people, Vuescan makes a lot of sense.

Pfft... - peetz

Suppose you tell us more about your scanner and this excellent software you're using. Is the company support also excellent? I'm not just being contrary here... I'd really like to know, because so far I have always disliked the software that came with the scanners I've owned, including the one purchased only a couple months ago. None of that software has ever measured up to VueScan. The one time I thought a VueScan update was causing problems, it turned out to be a hardware problem with my old scanner (which was ready for the boneyard anyway). I don't recall ever having a problem with broken registration either.

thanks for encouraging me to buy a new scanner - grahamlestergeorge_dotmac

$80 for a lifetime, with weekly updates and support! Just consider what you must pay to update all your other software over the years. Good on you Mr Hamrick! Graham LG.

The guy is entitled to his opinion. What I find amusing is the inevitability that Apple WILL figure out a way to break his scanner's software with another half-baked OS update or "security update". Want to guess what he'll be launching when that happens?

Think of all the landfills spared the scanners this software keeps running.
Worth the price alone.
