That's easy to fix! NeoOffice and OpenOffice by default use their own document format, but you can change the Preferences to have them save files as Microsoft Office format.

Under NeoOffice: Preferences, click on the Load/Save item and choose General. In the pane on the right, change the Default File Format settings for Text Document, Spreadsheet and Presentation to say "Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP" or similar. Click on OK to close the dialog.

You can also modify settings in the Finder so that when somebody double-clicks on a Word, Excel or PowerPoint document, NeoOffice will open that document automatically.
