SMART Utility - it DOES find a faulty drive - Bob DeVoe
I had a similar experience as that reported by dcollett: a flaky hard drive was reported as OK by both SMARTReporter and Disk Utility but as failing by SMART Utility. An hour later SMARTReporter and Disk Utility reported the drive to be failing, while SMART Utility reported it as failed. A half hour later still, SMARTReporter and Disk Utility finally reported it as failed. For me, the earlier warning by SMART Utility was well worth $20 (for 10 licenses), as it gave me the extra time to backup the data on the failing drive before it failed altogether.
SMART Utility is based on predictors of disk failure found by Google (http://labs.google.com/papers/disk_failures.html); it reports problems in these predictors before they rise to the threshold levels recognized by the disk manufacturers (which are the bases for reporting disk failures by SMARTReporter and Disk Utility).
