I just discovered a Service Scrubber Preference that blocks scanning my Time Machine disk:
"Only list service providers that are located on the boot volume"
That does the trick for my current Mac Pro configuration. It would not have worked in my former G4, where applications were on the smallish boot volume and another internal drive.
