Nope. If you're installing open-source system level software designed for Linux systems (CUPS), don't be surprised if it causes problems on OS X. There is no reason to install CUPS stuff outside of Apple's system updates, which are tweaked specifically for the unique vagaries of OS X.

The open source software world requires that you know what you are doing. If you don't, there is MacPorts of Fink to do it safely.
