Need root - styrax2

It tried to load Applejack in Single user and it tells me I need root access. Has worked for years (great utility!!!) and now am without it. Can anyone help?

Before you try to instal applejack, start your computer using the Apple and S keys. You'll see there is a program already loaded by Apple. It looks like AJ but will not accept any of the command we're used to. I don't get it.

I'm getting the same result as others. In Leopard it's saying I'm not logged in as root in red.
