Thanks for the comments and suggestions. You can get the key code in Mac applications from the hex code in Font Mate. For example, to get the UK pound sign (ASCII 0163, Hex 00A3) you can do alt-0163 in Windows or opt-00a3 on a Mac. You will need to have Hex input enabled on your Mac (in the International Preferences). I have made a minor change to the application to allow you to use the arrow keys to go up and down the font list (download v1.1.1 from the site). I thought about changing the font on hover, but that is a huge performance hit. I may make the "large character" display hover though.
