followed your instructions one by one the permissions were wrong as originally installed. I corrected them per your instructions. icon now bounces three times :-)
also performed the following.
Removed com.apple.iTunes.plist (from ~/Library/Preferences)
/System/Library/Extensions/ApplemobileDevice.kext
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.usbmuxd.plist
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DeviceLink.framework
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework
/System/Library/SynsServices/Schemas/Bookmarks.syncschema
as outlined in two fixes at Mac FixIT, Restart iMac and then iTunes 7.3.1, still will not start. I think I'll try reinstalling iTunes 7.2 next. Thanks for your suggestions.
