After reading your comment, I went to msnbc.com to take a look at one of their videos.

I found this page which has the video I used as a sample:

The video played fine on my system so I downloaded it to see exactly what format is used...

The download url was:

Note that it is a Flash video file. QuickTime can play Flash video files only if they were generated in Flash version 5 or prior - none of the newer Flash files are compatible with QuickTime. You can go to Apple menu > System Preferences > QuickTime > Advanced and uncheck the "Enable Flash" checkbox, and then also click "MIME Settings", scroll down to "Miscellaneous", expand that section by clicking the grey triangle to the left and ensure that "Flash media" is unchecked. Then quit System Preferences and quit any programs that use QuickTime (such as your web browser) and relaunch them.

Once this is done, your browser will no longer call the QuickTime plugin to handle Flash movies within web pages.

You can then install Adobe's -current- (version 9) Flash Player plug-in, which will support all versions of Flash video (although not necessarily all encoding but that's another story)

How in the world did you find the download URL for that flash movie on the MSNBC Video site?

Any possibility you could explain, or else tell me what the URL might be for this movie:
