There is a business deal between Flip4Mac and Microsoft. Whether there is an ownership interest, I could not speculate. F4M is not exactly a gentleman -- it wants to sell you its "Digital Media Tools" software. I think they inked a deal with MS to get better access to the implementation specs for the Windows Media format in exchange for providing this free playback software.

Flip4Mac used to charge $10 for this. After they made whatever deal with Microsoft, the player became free (and they offered a $10 discount on their "Pro" version to people who had paid already for the player -- a gentlemanly thing to do I suppose :-) ).
