I've found that it isn't slow if it's working on a folder that doesn't have a lot of other files in it. IOW, I take all of the rar and par files for a particular par and put them into a new folder before running it. That way, it doesn't seem to waste any time looking at all the other downloads, trying to figure out if they're part of the RAR set.

The effect of "endlessly doing nothing" usually occurs when the folder contains MANY other files. When a file set is not complete, the program first scans the remaining files in the folder to see if any of them match (part of) the missing files. When the folder contains many unrelated files, or when these files ar very big, the program will find nothing, but it will take a LONG time. Although this is obviously a waste of CPU time, there is no way for the program to know in advance which other files might be relevant. For that reason the program's Help explicitly recommends to make a separate folder with only the relevant files before running MacPAR deLuxe.

Yes, the par file says what files should be worked on, but what about when files get named wrong. Sometimes the files have odd characters in the name, and when they get downloaded, the name gets mangled. This is especially true of European accented characters. So, MPD checkes the other files in the folder to see if they might be good files with bad names. This is actually a good thing, but as stated, you should put all the stuff in its own folder.
