I like Pith Helmet too, but it does cause more crashes than running without it. I find it's usually on web pages with Flash content. Once I find a page that crashes 100% of the time, if I disable Pith Helmet and reload the page, no crash!
I read somewhere, perhaps here, that once Leopard ships Apple will be removing the ability for programs to control web content like Pith Helmet currently does. We'll see how that goes, perhaps it can be worked around, or maybe it'll be time to start using Firefox.
