Old versions won't work because of feature changes. When you try to log in with an old version, it will force you to upgrade.

Does the Mac just go black and shut down? And do you need to unplug for a few seconds before restarting? Could easily be your CPU temperature. Download Temperature Monitor. And get a small external fan you can use just during SL.

It's beta, but it doesn't crash on me. Might be worth a try. You might also want to empty out your preferences.
