WARNING! Allume sells your email-adress to spammers!! - vickishome

I have questioned why they require an email address to allow their customers to download their free files, other than opting you in for their newsletters which you must opt out of later, However, I can find no evidence to support your claim that they are selling our email addresses to spammers. What actual proof do you have to backup your claims?

The email address I use with them is one I created only for them. So if any spammers spam me using that address, I will know exactly where they got the email address.

I used that email address last year (Dec 2005), and have never found the Stuffit address used in any of the numerous spams (50-100) spams I receive daily on my main account. I had forgotten about downloading it from versiontracker, so I made the mistake of following their link in the upgrade popup which meant I gave them that same email address a second time.

So if they are in fact selling their customer's email addresses to spammers, I will conclusively know it. And so far, for at least one year, I have seen no evidence of spammers using that email address.

Therefore, I have to conclude that there must be another reason why your email addresses are receiving spam. If they're used on the internet in any way whatsoever, then spammers can grab them that way. The only way you can know for certain is to use an email address that is not listed on the internet in any way whatsoever (which can be done with your own domain and default forwarding). I fight spammers from grabbing email addresses from my websites' guestbooks on a constant basis. They are absolutely relentless in getting email addresses. So if you've used your email addresses online, then the spammers got it.

Spam has become a major problem with everyone attempting to use email. The explosion of spam in just this last year alone is sounding alarm bells with some saying email will become completely useless in the near future as spam continues to take over. I very seriously doubt all of this spam is coming from stuffit's little email address form.

Having said all that... regarding stuffit expander itself. It works. It nags me when an upgrade is released (which I can turn off in the preferences). I don't like jumping through hoops of giving them an email address in order to download their free software, but it's not that big of a deal. The simple answer is it just works, and that's all I really care about.
