Yes you're right of course, use built-in Archives (which is .zip), that's fine. But again: That's not the point. There are .sit-files out there. There are even reasons for that, but let's pretend there are none.

2) So you need Expander.
To say "if anyone used .dmg (or .zip)" does not really led anywhere...
