Well yes, it would be great if everybody used .dmg files - just that this is not the case.

Btw.: Maybe you are even a bit fast with your utopian solution - .dmg files would only be the solution if you configured alongside every server to handle them correctly, if not, many users would rapidly run into problems with the format. That's the reason why you mostly find .dmg.zip (or .dmg.sit): The file is usually not further compressed, but you are safe, no matter what server.
And, come on! It is not ironic, that expander does not come compressed, it is logic.
