You could not be more correct, This app. does its job without me even knowing it's there. I have had nothing but positive results with it. And it is Free.

StuffIt Expander: Always on top - Mil Mascaras

A few big bugs that remain in Stuffit: Often, it will expand a valid archive into an empty folder. AND, sometimes it will claim that it will take 6571375361163134 hours to expand an archive (though it takes a little less than that..) . AND sometimes, it will try to expand an archive, finds the archive to be corrupt, and will stop:Then when quit Stuffit, and you throw away this potentially corrupt archive, it will not let you empty the trash, because the item is "in use", and you cant throw away until you restart (or chmod). These bugs have are well known, and have existed for years. Thank goodness, stuffit expander is free, when I need to unstuff, but I do all my stuff in .zip or .dmg. I am an expert level tech in charge of hundreds of Macs, and can verify these errors to still be there... So it is far from perfect, .zip is a better format, but it is free....
