License policy - Vic Lennard

I've been using SPX for 15 months to provide a backup for a server (running Mac OS X Server) of around 250GB. This includes multiple partitions and drives. Aside from the Mac OS X 10.3 "too many files open" bug, which disappeared when I upgraded to Mac OS X Server 10.4, SPX has run flawlessly in backup mode. I've read through many of the problems here and most, if not all, of them appear to be user error. And no, I don't work for the company.

Two things on the licence issue. First, we pay heavy fees for updates to the Quark and Adobe software we use on a daily basis. I really don't see the problem in paying the equivalent of $25 per year for this software - my data's worth a lot more than that.

Second, in my opinion it's a cop out in refusing to provide *any* support for previous versions. If I can still get Quark to answer questions on QXP 4, you guys should be prepared to help out, especially if the brown stuff hits the fan. Not all users are going to have the technical expertise to solve problems and by refusing to support previous versions you lose customers. Just my 2c worth.

They lost me sometime ago over this very issue. Not only would they not provide any support but when I lost the application (which had been working fine) in crash they refused to provide me with the version I had purchased. When I questioned this policy I was met with a curt if not snotty reply. Now I use SuperDuper for bootable back ups and ChronoSync for all the various small syncing and back ups I do. I had owned Synchronize for a long time.

I too recognize the need to make money but the annual fee isn't in line with other similar apps and the refusal to provide support & access for previous versions certainly can't help customer relations. Why else would I take the time to comment at all?
