Good question -- 2-up is an option built in to the printer drivers, but "imposition" is something different.
If you want to make a stapled magazine, regular 2-up gets the page order wrong. 2-up puts page 1 on the left hand side, but if you staple and fold, the left-hand side is the <b>back cover</b> of the magazine. "Imposition" is the process of reordering the pages so that they come out in the right order for books, magazines and pamphlets. Hence this program.
