while i can't say that i've tried this program, the whole buzz around 'phoning home' isn't such a big deal. you are probably using little snitch? and if so 99% of all programs that trigger a little snitch alert are just checking for updates.
again i don't know about this exact program but that is the case with almost all others. with exceptions of course. but just phoning home to check for an update shouldn't be a cause of alarm in itself. you can usually switch this off in the program anyways.
