Here are two possible reasons (beyond those you advance) why someone might write a negative review and not call you for support/refund

* The product is not legitimately owned
* The user has already given up, claiming the purchase price back is not going to address the original issue - data loss.

BTW. I have used the product. The Desktop Services folks at my place of work used it to recover files for me, so it worked for me.
