The developer is generously contributing, free-of-charge, something quite specific for users of Google Cal who need a simplified interface to access their calendars on a Mac. Gcal fills the gap where Google and iCal don't meet - entirely without cost to the end-user. (Spanning Sync, which is not freeware, is another alternative.)
