There are free options IF YOU LIVE IN THE US and some other countries. But in many countries SMSes are quite expensive, so the .10 price is cheap. Also, it's extremely convenient being able to use this nice widget to be able to SMS just about any mobile number worldwide without being constrained by which networks are included.
