Lilypond is fabulous - badmuthahubbard
Lilypond is probably not for the person who likes to print up scores on the computer with a minimum of fuss. But Lilypond is for the composer or musician who is willing to spend a little more time in order to produce a beautiful score. One thing I have learned from the comp teachers at my school is that time is money, and a competitive composer is often better off spending a few hundred dollars to save a few minutes of production time. I don't much care about professional engravers- I don't intend to be one- but I am interested in what other composers use, and in this regard Lilypond is the exception.
The teachers here also emphasize that correct notation isn't nearly as important as clear notation. I've run into lots of cases where a part is easier to read if it is spread out more, as the Lilypond people criticize Finale for.
