A big leap in the wrong direction – and an alternative GUI suggestion. - zimbop
I'm suggesting for people who want a free music engraving application to try Finale Notepad and see if it meets their needs, not everyone needs to produce an orchestral score.Friday, May 12 2006 @ 02:10 PM PDT

A TeX Approach to Notation?!?! No Thanks! - Billsey
So, the coders try to attract professional engravers by telling you, “Don’t listen to that Professional Engraver!” How curious! Now, according to them, in order to print out the best sheet music you not only need to be a professional engraver, you also need to ignore, perhaps even ridicule, the advice of professional engravers, be an accomplished programmer, and put up with a GUI that is deficient enough that others try to replace it by “rolling their own”, so to speak. You can count me out.
While I am not a professional engraver, I have tried my hand at composing (including over 50 hymns) and I know something of the output of Finale products. Those who have problems with performing what I write have those problems because of what I wrote—not because of what Finale output.
If you really want to win people over you need to start by ceasing the practice of distorting the truth and starting the practice of improving your own product. This is not an election campaign; you don't win by slandering the competition.

I totally agree. The guts of the application shouldn't be dumped in the users' lap!Belongs in the dark ages of DOS.
I suspect the creator(s) of LilyPond lack the skills to apply a GUI to their product...

Finale Notepad instead of LilyPond?!? - Ulrich Kapp
Finale Notepad is very easy to use, OK, but do you really think you can engrave complex music in a demandable quality? Are you in earnest?
