I had similar problms with downloads from my own site.
If your hosted on a UNIX/Apache based server, an easy way around this is to use a little .htaccess file at the root of your web directory.
I am no expert myself, but found it extremely easy to set up (takes around 10 minutes!) and allows all downloads to, well, download as expected by all browsers.
