Resourceforks? - TriVectus

As of 10.4, most of the familiar Unix commands, such as cp, support resource forks and other extended metadata (such as ACLs) by default. Such support is also in 10.4's rsync, but it's not automatic, Instead, you must specify the -E option. Keep in mind that the version of rsync on both ends of the transfer (in the case of transfers from one machine to another) must support resource forks, which is probably why it's not a default option. See the man page for more information.

Prior to 10.4, you are correct that the version of rsync included with OS X did not support resource forks.
