Why not use Fink for free (can also install KDE, GNOME, etc.) - greatcow951

I explained that to a friend of mine wanting a Mactel for a tri-boot system (Win, Mac, and Linux). I said "You can use Fink and X11 to run the Linux stuff." He agreed with me. Then I asked why Linux users don't do this and he said "because it's not free as in beer."

Hopefully it isn't the case of Linux users wanting everything for nothing.

Because it is faster and has a larger group of people maintaining these apps. It can also run on older Macs that the latest versions of X11 cannot.

Neither fink nor DarwinPorts offer all packages of all softwares available. For that matter, neither do all Linux or BSD distros. In other instances, packages available for one distro will be very different from the "same" software package offered in another distro. Both fink and DarwinPorts offer several packages with out-of-date dependency versions which in some cases are very cumbersome to overcome, or strange and incomplete feature sets. One can build from source, but this can be extremely frustrating when dealing with a large program with many dependencies. Essentially, you are picking yor poison.
