Right, I connected to my main machine from a G3 iMac running Tiger via the Go menu and mounted the image with Toast 6.1.1.
The image mounted correctly and was able to transfer the drive image back to the main box and it's loading (s.l.o.w.l.y) so all seems well. I'm presuming that the other successful users are also running Toast 7.X which leaves Panther as the most probable cause of my former woes.
