...I think the adjustment is not made in the song data but an iTunes tag (ie the sound check volume data). Its not a major adjustment. It is just changing something that is already there and not always required anyway.

The bottom line is that it is no worse than the current iTunes sound check method. In fact, I find it sounds great. If you still dont like it then just turn 'Sound Check' off and iTunes will play the raw data of the song. Also the old settings are archived and its a hell of a lot quicker to change back or adjust as the files would have all been analised.

Regarding the iPod. Yes, I understand the iPod will synch soon after the adjustments are made and thats a good thing as the improvements will be passed onto the playback of the iPod.

I have adjusted my files as 'single song mode' So it has adjusted every song. If I want to listen to a whole album and benefit from the albums relative quiet tracks then I simply turn 'Sound Check' off for the duration.

Give it a go. It'll take you about four days and, fortunatly, you dont have to 'babysit' the programe as it runs.
