there are lots of other options:
hiding the dock BEHIND windows (great for me with using some apps fullscreen on a 12" powerbook)

locking icons in the dock; showing hidden files, or system files; other things (i've tried & don't use...but useful for someone...)

Clear Dock is a hack, this is an application with no known "issues". Well worth the money, believe me.

Except that you can't use cleardock as a root user! Transparent dock works fine as root!
