how's about just double-clicking it and finding out?

a .dmg is a disc image, much like an .iso or a .toast, you have to mount them. if you store it on your hard drive, locate and click it to mount (mounts onto the desktop and in your drive list from the finder). You can, alternativey, burn this as a disc with Disk Utility or even the finder.

Simply double click on the .dmg file. OSX will "Mount" the file as if it were a disk.

It should appear in your sidebar AND open itself as a window to show the contents. If it doesn't open automatically just double click on the icon in the sidebar.

You can then use the contents as you would any other files, except the .dmg file is usually locked and does not let you make changes to its contents.

The advantage of the .dmg file is that it contains and protects all the contents when passing over the net. It can also be compressed and therefore smaller than its contents.

I have however found some .dmg files lose their Mac file type when copied onto a USB Flash drive because these are usually formatted for PCs. This means it may not mount when opened or copied from the USB drive.
