Uhm, you decided Spotlight was not for you without even giving it a shot?
Seriously, sure you can find your documents, apps, files and what not fast, but Spotlight does it way faster. You should really give it a go before deciding it is worthless. Spotlight does not have few fans out there, there are tons. And for a good reason!
If ever you need to open up an app fast, press Apple key + Space bar, type in the app (or just a few of the first characters, down arrow and enter key. Might sound like a lot of work, but it sure beats clicking away with your mouse and you won't end up with Mouse-pains in your shoulder or arms.
Once in a while remember to reset the drive in Spotlight prefs to optimize the search.
There is a reason why Microsoft copied this gem to Vista. And just wait, it will get even faster and better in upcoming OS X updates.
