Didn't your new Powerbook come with Garage Band? I think you can use that for simple audio recording (and more!)... a lot of podcasts are done on it. But then, sometimes the people in tech support can be pretty clueless, can't they? Audio Hijack Pro is another piece of shareware (a bit pricier than this freeware; I don't remember the exact pricetag now) that can be good if you want to record from line-in or other applications with filtering or mixing supported.
