The best OOo Release (for the Mac) yet! - Joe Wheeler
Word 5??? If that were true, the reviewer is referring to the most historically esteemed word processor for Mac of all time.
No, don’t confuse the simplicity of the default interface with backwardness. This suite has enormous power; and, people who are hooked on “Aqua” are missing the benefits of one of the most versatile tools available on any platform.
It works well “out of the box” but considering it is free (or worth whatever you decide to donate), it is worth spending some time with. Due to the nature of open source this already great collection can be made even better with a little time and some customization, within the program and without. For example, anti-aliasing can be improved, PDFs can be saved with bookmarks, indices, you can add any font you have, and on and on. Some of these functions require additional free software, e.g. to convert Mac fonts to Unix or Windows format, but considering that 6 hours of customization will bring this up to the power of a page layout program, an in-depth spreadsheet, a database, an HTML editor, a presentation tool, even an image manipulator, well, even if you value your time at $50 an hour, considering it would cost well over a thousand bucks to get the equivalent software through behemoth software corporations, it is time well spent IMHO.
There are some excellent tips for doing great mods here: http://www.entropy.ch/software/macosx/docs/openoffice-mac/
NeoOffice/J is nice, but slow and generally junior league compared to this puppy. I wish the NeoOffice people all the best as they come up to speed, but OpenOffice 2.0 is far faster and more versatile. In fact it is downright awesome, truly a killer of that commercial “Office” program that everyone hate$ to love. Put in the time to set it up, send in your donation, and you still have enough money left over to treat yourself to that long-desired goody or two. Think of it as a treat provided coming however indirectly from Billy G's pocket. And genuine thanks to the Mac afficianados who ported it and Sun Microsystems for this prodigious effort.
