This avoids the iPod's normal method of adjusting volume on-the-fly and is not subject to it's firmware bug. This actually adjusts the gain values for each frame of the MP3 or AAC file and the change will follow it to any player (for me, that's iTunes, iPod and SqueezeBox2).
