You just got here from Windows. right? This ain't that. If the "phoning home" really bothers you, get Little Snitch. But it really is okay to drop the paranoia level a few hundred notches, and it is really not okay to single out ecto; this is the routine manner in which OS X apps perform version update checks, and can usually be turned off in Preferences anyway.

That's the version-check. At start up, ecto loads http://kung-foo.tv/ecto2.xml which to verify if it's the latest version. You can turn that off in the Preferences dialog. There's no phoning-home.

When you purchase ecto via eSellerate and enter the serial provided, there is a one-time activation. That's all.

There is no transmission of private data or whatever.
