WHy bother? - matt_s

Not helpful. Disabling indexing disables all searches. I want to still find a file by name, I just don't want Stoplight sticking it's nosey little algorithm into the content of my files.

Why can't we turn CONTENT indexing off? And maybe get rid of that Microsoft-blue rectangle as well.

SEARCH vs INDEX ? - Polar11

It is my understanding (or misunderstanding) that the PRIVACY tab only disables the SEARCH function for the listed files, folders, or volumes. PRIVACY does not stop the INDEXING function which still takes up resources and makes certain volumes unavailable while indexing is taking place. Spotless is a useful tool to keep spotlight under control.

WHy bother? Prevent unwanted disk write - cavenewt

Here's a good reason to Why Bother: If you want to plug in a Firewire drive to, say, run Data Rescue to look for accidentally deleted files, you need to prevent indexing BEFORE the drive is available in the privacy tab of Spotlight. If you want to recover files, you don't want anything written to the drive, because the lost files might get overwritten.

Or maybe you just don't want Spotlight to index a drive that's only going to be attached to your computer temporarily, say to transfer a file.

I've read that a Safe Boot will disable Spotlight, but it might disable something else that I want to use, too.
