Why? - Happy_Pig
It depends on what processor you have. I've seen various processes of Spotlight taking up considerable resources on my PBG4 1GHz. Thanks for the app.Thursday, May 19 2005 @ 12:55 PM PDT

"...indescribably useful" ??? No, it's indescribably awful.A search for a file today returned 1,209 returns. It was actually easier to manually go and locate the file than to search through Stoplight's search returns. Looking for the same thing in 10.3.9, I received 3 returns, one of which was the file I was looking for and another, an alias of that file. Much faster, much more powerful.
Power isn't about shock and awe it's about getting things done.
In 20 years of using Macs, not once have I ever had to search for something that was inside of a document. I've always known what it was I was looking for just didn't recall the precise NAME of the file. Now, I can't even do that anymore without having to tell the stupid search program to look for something by name.
I don't want Stoplight indexing the content of my data. I want Stoplight to get the hell out of my life. It's just an incredibly annoying application.
Additionally, Stoplight has pretty much rendered our externall HDD's useless. But that's a long and dreary tale.
I wish we had some control over the machine again. I'd like to be able to search for file name without having to tell the idiot search app to search by file name over and over and over again. It's just not smart enough to maintain these settings and it's not powerful enough to know what it's owner wants to actually search for. It's going to tell me what I cn and cannot search for, and how it's going to do that, never mind what I want.

Why? Because... - John Goodchild
Spotlight can cause problems with backing up files and creating bootable clones. This is not meant to be a permanent solution - rather a temporary disable while you perform functions that Spotlight can cause problems with. Please take a look at the Spotlight articles on MacFixIt.com and you will see that there is a need for this tool.If you aren't having problems, then you do not need Spotless.
