re: Don't Bother With Tiger - Olu070

What a bunch of nonsense. Just because you tested Tiger on a demo machine you feel like you've thoroughly tested the OS? Give us a break. Tiger is well worth the $129. On my 15" PB there is a noticeable speed up in the GUI, application launching, boot speeds, expose, application switching and many other functions(compared to Panther). Image manipulation in iPhoto is finally instantaneous. Spotlight on my PB with 65GB of data is near instantaneous. A search for a common item like .jpg takes about 7 seconds to finish. More specific phrases and spotlight is done in about 1-2 seconds, and this is with a G4 processor with a much slower hard drive then the machine you tested it on. Dashboard is NOT Konfabulator as many articles have reiterated over and over. Personally, I would have never paid for Konfabulator but as a free addition to the OS it's Dashboard is not bad.

Improved mail client, much faster Safari with RSS built in, improved battery life and less processor usage, OS level dictionary which can define words on the fly, smart folders...etc. Hey it's your loss, but there is NO WAY that an hour in an Apple store will even give you a clue as to what you're missing with Tiger

Don't Bother With Tiger - Martin Turner--2008

I'm not really sure that trying it on someone else's Mac at an Apple Store really gives you a platform to make these sweeping critcisms.

I have half a million files on my machine, the 70 GB disk is almost full, it's only a G4 1.33 PowerBook -- and spotlight runs like lightning. For example, it just found 1302 references to the word 'critic' in less time that Panther would have taken just to search through my emails.

I'm sure Apple will be really worried by your pathetic response.

I have a dual 2 Mhz G5 - Tiger is MUCH faster than 10.3. Spotlight is fast and absolutely brilliant, but then I actually use my Mac for work. So as a professiona;l user I reckon it's well worth the upgrade. Dashboard is good too. now we need a few power updates for the excellent Pages though I have just used it for an 80,000 word novel. And I need a book on how to create widgets.

Konfabulator? That was the 3rd party thing that crashed a lot wasn't it?

Maybe it's time for YOU switch to WinBlows.
Here is a link to their section in VT, just in case you don't know how to search in VT:

I disagree. Tiger is much faster on all my machines, from some old G4's to some new Dual G5's. And with 64-bit processing, things will get even faster. As far as Spotlight & Dashboard; they are nice enhancements, although not perfect by any means. But the overall speed increase and upgrades to Mail and Safari are definitely worth making the move to Tiger.

Oh please, how can you make these decisions based on some time on a workstation that isn't even your own. Give it a rest or try to make some constructive comments rather than sweeping and misinformed statements like these.

No two workstations set up and maintained by different users will act exactly the same. Anyone who works in an environment where there are multiple workstations will confirm this. Tiger isn't perfect, but it's well worth the upgrade for Spotlight alone which is brilliant.
