If I had to guess you work for Philips - but that Might be wrong... I'm in the same situation - big company with a high priority on using applications that are centrally managed and uniquely obtuse.
I found this link to be very helpful... While I still had to create an account at IBM to get the download, it did work. 6.5.4 seems much better in Tiger than 6.5 did.

Now if only I could find a better front end to Domino... IBM may make great servers - but it needs some serious help with the UI on the notes client... Maybe they could work a deal with Apple to help them here.

The IBM Lotus website seems to have been reorganised slightly, but it's still hard to find things. I got hold of Notes 6.5.4 for Mac by going to the following:
http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/lotus/downloads/
and choosing the 'Notes 6.5.x client only' link. I had to create a new developer account as my old one wasn't recognised.
