Gene, the value of Sp@mX is that it does in fact report to the sysadmins of the spoofed addresses so that they will know about the abuse of their reputation and can take action by also participating in tracing the true originating IP address wherever possible.Sp@mX does exactly what manual attempts do by going to the relevant NIC, tracing the address there and then reporting to the output abuse/postmaster address. If there are any errors made by Sp@mX, it is the same error that would happen by doing a manual RIR lookup or using some other automated software.

Gene, believe it or not, most people don't want to know the details of how Sp@mX works, but I'm happy to share...Sp@mX will only report the domain that was responsible for the delivery of the email to the user's MX. It wil then go down the list, and also report the domains that it can positively verify as a delivery point using rDNS.
It will also report spamvertized URLs in the body of the email to their respective ISPs.
