The USB-serial adapter adds the serial port... - jgs42

The GPSMAP doesn't to my knowledge come with a serial port, what do I do then?? I have the adapter but no serial port to plug into the GPSMAP ???

I don't know which GPSmap model you are talking about. My GPSmap 76CS has both USB and serial, and both work with the Mac if you jump through the right hoops. The serial port is the funny four-pin thing which is also a power port. You have to buy a special Garmin cable to use it (about US$30) in addition to the previously-discussed USB serial adapter. I've found USB works to the Mac if (a) you've updated the firmware on the GPSmap to 4.0, and (b) you use MacGPSBabel.
