Hopefully recommend! However, Does OmniOutliner ..... - Rob_Lewis_979

I too loved MORE and wish that OO had its Clone feature.

Hopefully recommend! However, Does OmniOutliner ..... - garyrog

As another MORE lover, I thought I'd mention how I've replaced cloning in the context of OmniOutliner. The disadvantage of my technique is that it's a bit more labor-intensive. However, to my mind, the advantage of the technique far outweighs the disadvantage: you can export an outline to OPML if there's ever a need to, import it into another outliner include a PC-based one, and still have your clones.

I keep a sticky open all the time with a number in it, which I think of as an "anonymous keyword". When I want a headline to be cloned, I put _0081 (or whatever the current number is) as the first subhead under the "cloned" headline. Then wherever I would put another reference to the clone, I put "kw 0081". To find a clone of the corrent headline, I look at the anonymous keyword, type it into the Find box, and I'm there.

Whenever I want another headline to be clones I increment the anonymous keyword number in the sticky by 1.

I find that the process of making a clone in this way takes about 5 or 10 seconds. Given that I only want to make clones once in several days, the time factor is inconsequential. And again, the advantage is that if I ever need to -- for instance, if what happened to MORE ever happens to OmniOutliner or if switch to PC's or if another outliner ever has a feature I can't live without, I can export my outline and import it into a totally different outliner and my "clones" will still work fine.

Honestly, my current thinking is that if/when OmniGroup adds clones to OmniOutliner, I probably won't use them, even though I loved MORE's clones, because I'd rather avoid product lock-in. At the very least, I well know at this point that what happened to MORE could happen to OO, since it DID happen to MORE. I refrain from depending on OO-specific features except for shortlived documents, and that policy allows me to do what I need to do, now and in the future.

But it bears reiterating that for me, the overhead associated with this technique is really quite trivial in the broader scheme of things, so built-in cloning is really not a significant loss, even though I use clones all the time.

Cloning in OmniOutliner - cogden

I totally agree with Frank - We've been asking for cloning since OmniOutliner 1.0. After v3.0 came out, we were promised that it was a key priority for version 4.0 - So far no luck. One has to wonder if OmniGroup is listening!!!!

No, is doesn't do cloning. Only TAO has it but it's GUI is a bit awkward.

Mori supports cloning. Be sure, also, to read "About this Particular Macintosh" column, which dissects outliners in detail, and has lots of discussion of cloning. I use Inspiration!as my main outliner, with Circus Ponies Notebook (or Mori; I'm currently evaluating) as my clipping package. Inspiration is marketed to high school teachers and students, but I teach grad school and I love it. It's very like More 3; I was even able to import all my old More outlines. (The import ability has been removed from latest versions, but I kept an old version around.)
