As stated by Flixton you still need to have Real Player on your computer in order to use the embedded player. Real player does supply a free version, so I'm not sure which principle you could be invoking here?

Unfortunately yes. You still need to have RealPlayer installed to use the embedded player (check the documentation). The BBC only streams using the RealPlayer format which needs the RP software to decode. Principles are tough sometimes, I guess you won't be listening to the BBC online. (Unless you want to listen to some of their archived material using WMP!)
