I agree with the bulk of your statement, however, one small clarification: Apple _did not_ rip off Konfabulator. In fact, it was the other way around -- the idea of small applets (AKA "widgets") running concurrently with bigger apps and the OS was first implemented as "Desk Accessories" on the original Mac in 1984.
