Actually, GIMP IS free if you build it yourself, perhaps using Fink. That doesn't preclude commercial distributions like this one, who prepackage it along with whatever other goodies they're bundling (including support, one would think.)

...further, I think the $49 is a CD(multiple?) and includes the installer (as mentioned regarding build).

I have a free install that has a nice launcher but I am not sure where it came from. Anyway, you can go to the site and download for free.
